Engineering Counselling: Which Process Is Yours, and What Is Free

• Your counselling process follows the colleges you want: CAP for Maharashtra colleges, JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) for IITs, NITs (National Institutes of Technology) and IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology), and TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions) for Tamil Nadu.

• Compare cutoffs only like with like, from the same year and the same CAP round. That is our recommendation for building a list of specific college-and-branch pairs.
• Build your list before MHT-CET 2027 results arrive, using the checklist below. Each item has a pass or fail test.

Your process is set by the colleges you want and the qualification or exam score they accept. A Maharashtra college seat comes through CAP, the process run by the State CET Cell (the state body that conducts MHT-CET and allots seats). An IIT, NIT or IIIT seat comes through JoSAA, and a Tamil Nadu seat through TNEA.

As of October 2026, CAP registration for 2026-27 has closed. If you are preparing for MHT-CET 2027, use the 2026 process below as a guide, and check the CET Cell portal for 2027 dates and rules when they are published.

In CAP you register after your results and fill an option form, which is your ranked list of colleges and branches. Seats are then allotted round by round, and there were four rounds in 2026.

If you are in the second or third row, the official portal is where you register.

A cutoff is the closing percentile for a particular course in a particular round. Use the courses to build your list. For the round-by-round rules, read MHT CET CAP Round Explained. We do not repeat those rules here.

If you are still in Class 12 and unsure whether you can sit the exam or compete for a seat, start with MHT CET Eligibility Criteria.

Have five things ready before results: your process named, your brochure read, a tiered college list, a branch-versus-college rule, and the helpline saved. Each item below has a test you can run, with a clear pass or fail. This is our recommended routine.

1. Name your process. Pass: you can write one line such as "MHT-CET, Maharashtra State candidate, State CET Cell engineering portal". Fail: your answer is "MHT or JEE, I will see".
2. Open the Information Brochure. The CET Cell publishes it on the engineering portal. Pass: you have found it, and you have located the list of documents you will need. Fail: you plan to check on the day registration opens.
3. Build a three-tier list: dream, match, safe. Pass: every entry is a specific college-and-branch pair, each one has a closing percentile from the same year, the same CAP round and the same seat code (the code that marks category and quota), and you would happily accept the last entry in each tier. 4. Write your branch-versus-college rule in one sentence. For example: "I take a lower-ranked college for Computer Engineering, but not for a branch I do not want." Pass: a parent and you can both read the sentence and agree. Fail: you decide on results day.
5. Save the CET Cell helpline. As of October 2026, the engineering portal lists +91-9175108612 and 18002098851, open 10:00 to 18:00 (fe2026.mahacet.org). Pass: both numbers are saved on a parent's phone and yours.
