Engineering Branch Selection: Branch or College in Maharashtra
Engineering branch selection in Maharashtra depends on your percentile, your goal and each college's placement record. The same percentile buys different branches at different colleges, so compare college and branch pairs.

Key takeaways
- 01Choose a college and branch pair, not a branch. Rank pairs by what your merit percentile reaches, then by three tests: the subjects, the job you want and the college's published placements.
- 02The computer-branch premium over mechanical and civil shrank between 2025-26 and 2026-27. Where both branches fill competitively it is only a few points, so check each college instead of assuming a rule.
- 03Build a dream, match and safe shortlist from the newest closing percentiles. A seat on your first preference is frozen in Round I, and a Round IV allotment is final.
- 04Most first-year students take Physics, Mechanics and Graphics, depending on group and semester, so prepare early whichever branch you get.

At the same college, a computer branch closed a median of 6.6 percentile points above mechanical in the 2026-27 third-round cut-off list of the State Common Entrance Test Cell (State CET Cell), which runs engineering admissions in Maharashtra. That is our own count of Open State-Level seats across 102 colleges, and the method is explained below.
A gap that size is what branch choice really is. You are not picking a branch from a menu. You are picking a college and branch pair that your merit percentile can reach, and every pair you rank above another is a trade.
Most advice stops at "follow your interest" or "check placements". Both are right, and neither tells you what your percentile can buy. This page gives you real closing percentiles, a worked example at 93 percentile, a worksheet and the freeze rules.
How does engineering branch selection work in Maharashtra counselling?
After the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) result, you rank up to 300 college and branch pairs in the option form of the Centralised Admission Process (CAP). Seats are allotted by merit, so you get the highest pair on your list that your merit percentile reaches. Merit percentile is the figure shown against your name on the CAP merit list, and raw marks cannot guarantee an MHT-CET percentile.

Each pair has a ten-digit choice code. The first five digits are the college code and the next five identify the course. For example, 0100261210 is Mechanical Engineering at Government College of Engineering, Amravati (college code 01002). The branch is part of what you rank, not a separate decision afterwards.
The number that matters for each pair is its closing percentile: the merit percentile of the last student allotted that seat in a round. If your percentile is at or above it, you were in range that year.
What each round locks in. Under the State CET Cell's 2026-27 information brochure (CAP rounds clause, pages 72 to 75):
- In Round I, a seat on your first preference is auto-frozen: you accept it and leave the process. In Round II the first three preferences auto-freeze, and in Round III the first six.
- A seat lower on your list you can freeze, which ends your counselling, or accept and stay in for betterment. Betterment means a later round can move you only to a pair listed above your current seat; if none is allotted, you keep the seat.
- There is no betterment after Round IV. The allotment made or retained in Round IV is final.
For a fuller walk-through, see what each of the four MHT-CET CAP rounds locks in.
How much more percentile does a computer branch cost than mechanical or civil?
At the same college, a computer branch closed a median of 6.6 points above mechanical and 8.3 above civil in 2026-27, down from 12.3 and about 14 a year earlier. The gap is not fixed: it was under 2.5 points at 28 of the 102 colleges and above 15 at 15.
How we counted. In October 2026 we read the State CET Cell's Round III cut-off list for 2026-27. For each college-branch row where the Open, State-Level seat category (GOPENS: general category, open to students from across Maharashtra) was listed first, we took the closing merit percentile for Stage I of the round. That gave 866 rows. Home University seats, which are reserved for candidates from the college's own university area, and rows where another category came first are not counted, so this is a large sample, not every seat. We ran the same count on the 2025-26 Round III list (713 rows).
"Computer" covers Computer Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, including variants such as Internet of Things (IoT) or cyber security. "AI" covers artificial intelligence, data science and machine learning branches.
| Branch family | Rows | Median closing percentile | Middle half of rows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Information Technology | 73 | 91.2 | 80.7 to 96.1 |
| Computer | 168 | 89.4 | 75.8 to 95.4 |
| AI, data science, machine learning | 137 | 86.9 | 71.9 to 93.4 |
| Electronics and Telecommunication | 105 | 85.8 | 72.7 to 95.2 |
| Mechanical | 106 | 80.4 | 67.6 to 91.3 |
| Electrical | 73 | 78.7 | 67.0 to 90.8 |
| Civil | 83 | 78.7 | 63.6 to 91.0 |
Source: our analysis of the 2026-27 State CET Cell list above, Open State-Level seats. Each family spans different colleges, so the cleaner measure is the gap inside one college:
- Computer versus mechanical: a median gap of 6.6 points, across the 102 colleges in our sample that offer both. At 9 of them, mechanical closed above computer.
- Computer versus civil: a median gap of 8.3 points across 78 colleges. At 5 of them, civil closed above computer.
- Year on year: at the 68 colleges present in both years' samples, the computer-versus-mechanical median fell from 12.6 to 6.6 points. At the 56 colleges present in both for civil, it fell from 14.1 to 9.0. The gap moves, so check each college.
- Where both branches fill competitively: at the 51 colleges where both computer and mechanical closed above 80, the median gap was 2.9 points. At the 35 where computer and civil both closed above 80, it was 4.1. So much of the overall gap comes from colleges where one of the two branches closed below 80.
The top of the list. At Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli, Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering, Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering and Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Pune, computer closed only 0.6 to 1.1 points above mechanical, so choosing mechanical there saves almost nothing.
What can a student on 93 merit percentile reach in Maharashtra engineering counselling?
A student on 93.00 merit percentile could have reached Computer Engineering at Government College of Engineering, Jalgaon (92.41) or Civil Engineering at Government College of Engineering, Amravati (92.56) in 2026-27. Mechanical at Amravati (93.13) was just out of reach, and Computer Science and Engineering there (97.43) was not close.
This is our worked example from the 2026-27 Round III list, Open State-Level seats, Stage I. It is an excerpt of a shortlist, not a full one:
| Tier | Pair | Closing percentile | Distance from 93.00 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dream | Mechanical Engineering, Government College of Engineering, Amravati | 93.13 | 0.13 above |
| Dream | Computer Engineering, Terna Engineering College, Nerul, Navi Mumbai | 93.83 | 0.83 above |
| Match | Mechanical Engineering, Shri Sant Gajanan Maharaj College of Engineering, Shegaon | 92.86 | 0.14 below |
| Match | Civil Engineering, Government College of Engineering, Amravati | 92.56 | 0.44 below |
| Match | Computer Engineering, Government College of Engineering, Jalgaon | 92.41 | 0.59 below |
| Safe | Mechanical Engineering, Government College of Engineering, Jalgaon | 89.55 | 3.45 below |
At Amravati, computer (97.43) closed 4.3 points above mechanical and 4.9 above civil. At Jalgaon, Computer Engineering (92.41) closed 2.9 points above Mechanical (89.55), so the same student could take computer there and keep mechanical as a safe choice.
Which branch should you rank first? The pair that passes three tests
Rank first the pair that passes three tests: you can name four subjects of the branch, it leads to the job you want, and the college publishes branch-wise placements. Percentile only decides which pairs are reachable.
Can you describe four subjects from the branch's first two years?
Pass if you can name four subjects from the branch's university syllabus and say in one sentence what each one is about. Fail if you only know the branch name. Use the university's syllabus, not a college brochure.
Does the branch lead to the work you want?
Pass if you can name the job or exam you are aiming at and confirm the branch qualifies. Fail if your answer is "a good package". In our view, a computer, IT or AI branch gives the most direct route to software jobs. For government jobs no single branch is safe: each recruitment notice lists the degrees it accepts, so read the notice before you rely on a branch. For core engineering, we would weigh the college's labs and industry links above the branch name.
Does the college publish placement figures for that branch?
Pass if the college can give you, for the last three batches, branch-wise numbers for students who sat for placement, students placed and the median package (the middle salary among placed students, which a few very high offers do not inflate), and not just the highest package. Fail if you only get a highest package or a college-wide percentage. Ask the admission office in writing, and place a pair that fails this test below one that passes.
How do you build a dream, match and safe shortlist?
Sort every pair you like by its closing percentile against your own: dream pairs close up to 2 points above you, match pairs close within 3 points below you, and safe pairs close more than 3 points below. This is our rule, not an official one.

The worksheet. Write your merit percentile as P, then fill one row per pair:
| Field | What to write | Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Pair | College and branch | Both written exactly as in the option form |
| Closing percentile | From the newest Round III or Round IV list | Same seat category as yours |
| Tier | Dream (P to P+2), Match (P−3 to P), Safe (below P−3) | Our suggested minimum: 2 dream, 4 match, 4 safe |
| Subject test | Four subjects named | Yes or no |
| Placement test | Branch-wise report seen | Yes or no |
Order the option form with dream pairs first, then match, then safe, and drop any pair you would not actually join. A seat on your first preference is frozen the moment it is allotted.
The decision rule.
| Situation | What we would do |
|---|---|
| Software goal, computer branch within match range at a college that publishes placements | Rank it first |
| Software goal, computer branch reachable only at a college with no branch-wise figures | Rank it below a mechanical, electrical or electronics pair at a college that does publish them |
| Core goal (mechanical, civil, electrical) | Rank by college quality first, then branch |
| Not sure yet | Rank the strongest college whose branch passes the subject test |
Closing percentiles change every year, so rerun the worksheet with the newest lists on the State CET Cell's engineering admissions portal. Our page on why official CAP data makes an MHT-CET college predictor safer shows how to turn these cut-offs into a list.
We also teach this step. Our free Engineering Counselling for ALL!! course covers CAP rounds, college and branch selection, cutoffs and option-form guidance, taught by Rahul Jewaani (RG Sir). Start there before you fill your form.
What should you prepare for first year, whichever branch you get?
Prepare for Physics, Mechanics and Graphics: most first-year students at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and Mumbai University take them, depending on group and semester. Our guide to first year engineering classes in Maharashtra shows what to take and when.
We teach these subjects in Hinglish. As of October 2026 our store lists Physics in SPPU and Mumbai University versions, while Mechanics and Graphics cover all universities. Padhna Aasaan Hai, especially when you start early.
