Engineering Physics 1: Find Your Syllabus, Then Plan Marks

Engineering physics 1 is a different course at each university. Find your syllabus by course code and first module, then split your revision by lecture hours, which signal each module's weight.

By Rahul Jeewani, Founder · Updated 9 Oct 2026

A student in India studies physics at a desk with a textbook, notebook, pendulum and glass prism in soft window light.

Key takeaways

  1. 01
Check your course code (BSC102, FEC102, BSC-102-BES or PH25C01) and your first module before you trust any notes or question list.
  2. 02
Mumbai's NEP syllabus has 26 lecture hours across six modules. By our estimate, a 4-hour module is worth about 6.9 of 45 marks and Quantum Physics about 10.4.
  3. 03
At SPPU every unit carries 12 of 60 marks, so no unit can be skipped. At Mumbai, be solid on at least four of the six modules.
  4. 04
Anna University's 2025 regulation requires at least 45% in the end-semester exam and 50% overall to pass.

Search "engineering physics 1" and you will find syllabus PDFs that disagree with each other. No single course carries the name. At the University of Mumbai, current batches study Applied Physics (code BSC102), and older batches studied Engineering Physics-I (FEC102). Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) calls its course Engineering Physics. Anna University's newest regulation calls it Applied Physics – I.

The mix-up has real consequences. SPPU's revised first-year pattern, in force from 2025-26, sets the physics theory paper at 60 marks across five units, 12 marks per unit. A question list written for the wrong syllabus can send you to revise units that are not in your paper.

This page helps you identify your syllabus in three checks. It then gives an estimated marks split by module for the Mumbai University schemes, and a one-week plan if you are starting late. All facts are as of October 2026.

What is engineering physics 1, and which version is yours?

Engineering physics 1 is the first physics course of a B.E. or B.Tech degree. Its name, code and content depend on your university and admission year. Here is how the versions we checked line up, as of October 2026.

UniversityCourse and codeWho it applies toTheory marks
University of Mumbai, NEP schemeApplied Physics, BSC102First-year admissions from 2024-2530 internal + 45 end-semester = 75

Terms in the table:

  • NEP is the National Education Policy 2020, which the new first-year curricula follow.
  • Rev-2019 'C' Scheme is the University of Mumbai's 2019 syllabus revision.
  • CCE is comprehensive continuous evaluation, SPPU's internal marks (tests, assignments, quiz, activity).
  • Term work is marks for practical journals and submitted work.
  • Regulation is Anna University's rulebook for a batch, which fixes both syllabus and exam rules.

SPPU's earlier version of the 2024 pattern, for 2024-25 admissions, split marks 30 (CCE) and 70 (end-semester) in the college copy we checked. If you joined in 2024, confirm which version your college follows.

Other universities, such as Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) and Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (RGPV), use their own syllabi. We have not mapped them here.

How do you check which engineering physics syllabus applies to you?

Run three checks, and trust your syllabus only when all three agree.

Hands compare two printed syllabus booklets on a desk while a pencil follows the first page of one.
Matching your own booklet against the course details is how you confirm the right syllabus.
  1. 1

    Course code

Find it on your timetable or marksheet. BSC102 is Mumbai NEP, FEC102 is Mumbai Rev-2019, BSC-102-BES is SPPU, and PH25C01, PH3151 and PH8151 are Anna.
  2. 2

    First module

Mumbai NEP starts with Lasers. Mumbai Rev-2019 starts with Quantum Physics. SPPU starts with Fundamentals of Photonics. Anna R2025 starts with Properties of Matter, R2021 with Mechanics, and R2017 with Properties of Matter.
  3. 3

    Textbook list

The Mumbai syllabi list Avadhanulu and Kshirsagar first. SPPU and Anna print their own lists.

Also check your admission year against the table above. A mismatch on any one point means you have the wrong document.

Where do the marks sit in the Mumbai University physics paper?

The Mumbai NEP paper is worth 45 end-semester marks, and the lecture hours let us estimate how they spread across six modules. This is our model, not a university statement. The NEP syllabus does not say weightage follows hours, so treat the numbers as an emphasis guide only.

The working: module share = module hours ÷ 26 total hours; estimated marks = share × 45.

ModuleLecture hoursEstimated marks of 45 (our model)
I Lasers46.9
II Fibre Optics46.9
III Interference in Thin Films46.9
IV Electrodynamics46.9
V Quantum Physics610.4
VI Basics of Semiconductor Physics46.9

For example, Quantum Physics is 6 ÷ 26 × 45 = 10.4 marks. The hours come from the college copy of the University of Mumbai NEP syllabus.

The paper has five questions of 15 marks each. Question 1 is compulsory and covers the maximum content. In every other question, parts (a) and (b) come from different modules. You answer three questions in total. Because the pairs are mixed, you cannot choose by module, so we recommend being solid on at least four of the six modules.

The syllabus lists the exam duration as 1.5 hours in one table and 2 hours in another. That is 30 minutes per answer at 1.5 hours and 40 minutes at 2 hours. Confirm the duration on your hall ticket.

The Rev-2019 syllabus does state that module weightage is proportional to lecture hours. Its paper has six questions of 15 marks, Question 1 is compulsory, and you answer four. The working: marks = hours ÷ 26 × 60.

ModuleLecture hoursEstimated marks of 60 (our model)
1 Quantum Physics716.2
2 Crystallography36.9
3 Semiconductor Physics613.8
4 Interference in Thin Film613.8
5 Superconductors and Supercapacitors24.6
6 Engineering Materials and Applications24.6

The figures are rounded, and the university gives the rule, not these numbers. At Mumbai the lab is a separate course (BSL101 in NEP, FEL101 in Rev-2019), so it does not add to these theory marks.

What do the SPPU and Anna University engineering physics courses look like?

SPPU. The revised Engineering Physics course (BSC-102-BES) carries 3 theory credits and 1 practical credit, with 3 theory hours and 2 practical hours a week. Marks are CCE 40, end-semester 60 and term work 25. It has five units of 8 hours each, 40 hours in all:

  1. Fundamentals of Photonics
  2. Quantum Physics
  3. Wave Optics
  4. Semiconductor Physics and Ultrasonics
  5. Physics of Nanoparticles and Superconductivity

The university's guidelines give each unit 12 of the 60 end-semester marks, so each is 20% of the paper. Skipping a unit costs you a fifth of the marks. The same unit-by-unit logic applies to the other SPPU first-year subjects; our SPPU Engineering Mechanics online course page shows it for the five Engineering Mechanics units.

Anna University. The 2025 course PH25C01 Applied Physics – I has 2 lecture hours and 2 practical hours a week for 3 credits. Its syllabus covers properties of matter, oscillations and waves, quantum mechanics and applied optics. Continuous assessment and the end-semester exam each carry 50%. Under clause 17.18(i) of Academic Regulations 2025, you pass with at least 45% in the end-semester exam and at least 50% in total. The clause covers theory, laboratory-integrated theory and laboratory courses.

The Regulation 2021 course PH3151 has five units of 9 hours: Mechanics, Electromagnetic Waves, Oscillations Optics and Lasers, Basic Quantum Mechanics, and Applied Quantum Mechanics. The 2021 and 2025 courses share Schrödinger's equation, the particle in a box, the Michelson interferometer, the air wedge, and Nd:YAG and CO2 lasers. Their unit structures differ, so check the 2021 syllabus or the 2017 syllabus if you belong to an earlier batch.

Which textbook should you use for first-year engineering physics?

Use A Text Book of Engineering Physics by Dr. M. N. Avadhanulu and Dr. P. G. Kshirsagar (S. Chand), which both Mumbai syllabi list first. The NEP syllabus also lists the following:

  • Modern Engineering Physics by A. S. Vasudeva (S. Chand).
  • Engineering Physics by D. K. Bhattacharya and Poonam Tandon (Oxford).
  • Engineering Physics by R. K. Gaur and S. L. Gupta (Dhanpat Rai).
  • Engineering Physics by V. Rajendran (McGraw Hill).
  • Introduction to Electrodynamics by D. J. Griffiths, as a reference for the Electrodynamics module.

The same syllabus lists three free National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) video courses, run by the IITs and IISc: 115102124, 115102025 and 115105132. For SPPU and Anna, use the textbook list printed in your own syllabus.

How do you study engineering physics 1 when you are starting late?

Spend a week on it, weighted by lecture hours. This is our recommendation, using the Mumbai NEP syllabus as the example.

The working: 7 days × 5 hours = 35 study hours. Each module gets 35 × module hours ÷ 26. A 4-hour module gets 5.4 hours, and the 6-hour Quantum Physics module gets 8.1 hours.

A student studies at a desk in the evening with a textbook, an open weekly planner, a lamp and a cup of tea.
A week of focused evening sessions is enough to cover the heavier modules first.
  1. 1

    Day 1

Confirm your syllabus with the three checks. Download your university's last two or three question papers.
  2. 2

    Days 2 to 5

Study Quantum Physics first, then the other modules in syllabus order. For each module, learn the definitions, the derivations and the problem types the syllabus names. For Quantum Physics these are de Broglie wavelength problems and the energy of a particle in a rigid box.
  3. 3

    Day 6

Do one timed paper at 30 minutes per answer if your exam is 1.5 hours, or 40 minutes if it is 2 hours.
  4. 4

    Day 7

Revise formulas and definitions across all modules, because the compulsory question covers most of the syllabus.

At SPPU, split the 35 hours evenly, 7 hours per unit, because each unit carries 12 marks. If you have already fallen behind a lecture batch, our guide to rebuilding physics chapter by chapter after falling behind covers that case.

Frequently asked questions

Quantum physics is in the Mumbai, SPPU and Anna 2021 and 2025 syllabi we checked. Lasers, fibre optics and thin-film or wave-optics interference appear in most of them. Semiconductor physics appears in the Mumbai and SPPU syllabi but not in the Anna 2021 or 2025 courses.
Under Anna University's Regulation 2025, you need at least 45% in the end-semester exam and at least 50% overall. The Mumbai and SPPU syllabus documents we used list marks and exam format but no pass mark, so confirm it with your college exam cell.
At Anna University they do: in a 2-0-2-3 course like PH25C01, practical work carries 10% of the 50% continuous assessment, and the 50% overall pass mark includes it. At Mumbai the lab is a separate course (BSL101 or FEL101), so it is not part of the 75-mark theory paper. SPPU lists 25 term-work marks alongside the theory course.
Yes, 35 study hours over a week is a workable plan for the Mumbai NEP paper, because you answer only three of five questions. This is our recommendation, not a guarantee. Cover Quantum Physics and the compulsory question's wide syllabus first.
With 35 hours for the Mumbai NEP syllabus, spend about 5.4 hours on each 4-hour module and 8.1 hours on Quantum Physics. The working is 35 × module hours ÷ 26, and it is our model. For another time budget, replace 35 with your total hours.
