MHT CET Chemistry: Syllabus, Book, Weightage and Time Plan
MHT CET chemistry is 50 questions in a 90-minute paper shared with physics, set from the Maharashtra state board syllabus, so the state board textbook comes first and weightage tables need checking.

Key takeaways
- 01MHT CET chemistry is 50 one-mark questions, 10 from Class 11 and 40 from Class 12, with no negative marking. Read the Maharashtra state board textbook first, then drill timed multiple-choice questions.
- 02The official syllabus gives no chapter-wise question counts, and three public weightage tables we checked contradict each other. Use them to order revision, never to skip a chapter.
- 03Aim to finish chemistry in 35 to 40 minutes of the shared 90. That is 42 to 48 seconds per question, and every minute saved gives physics 1.2 seconds more per question.
- 04Call a chapter done only when it passes five tests: book, sheet, MCQ, error log and mixed set.

Chemistry is the section where a student who knows the textbook loses the least time, and a student who skips a unit loses the most. Every question is worth one mark, and no chapter is optional.
The State Common Entrance Test Cell (CET Cell) sets 10 of the 50 chemistry questions from Class 11 and 40 from Class 12 (CET Cell, Technical Education CET syllabus 2026-27, page 1, MHT-CET 2026). A fifth of the section therefore comes from units you studied a year before the exam.
Because physics and chemistry share one sitting, speed in chemistry decides how much time physics gets.
This page works backwards from that structure. It covers the book the questions follow, how to check the chapter weightage (the share of questions a chapter contributes) you will see online, a time budget for the shared paper, and five tests that show when a chapter is done.
What does the MHT CET chemistry paper contain?
Chemistry is 50 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) worth one mark each, 10 from Class 11 and 40 from Class 12, with no negative marking. The Maharashtra Health and Technical Common Entrance Test (MHT CET) puts physics and chemistry together as Paper II: 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes (CET Cell, 2026 syllabus and marking scheme, page 1). That page is a scanned image, so it does not copy as text.
The same page says the difficulty is "at par with the JEE (Main)" and that questions are "mainly application based". The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is India's national engineering entrance exam. The point for you is that a question often asks you to use a fact, not repeat a line.
For the 2026 exam, the Class 11 questions come from ten units: Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry, Structure of Atom, Chemical Bonding, Redox Reactions, Elements of Group 1 and 2, States of Matter (Gaseous and Liquids), Adsorption and Colloids (Surface Chemistry), Hydrocarbons, Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry, and Chemistry in Everyday Life. The Class 12 questions come from the whole 2025-26 Class 12 syllabus.
Wrong answers lose nothing, so answer all 50. Our page on MHT CET negative marking shows how to guess sensibly.
As of 4 October 2026, the CET Cell's notices still cover the 2026 cycle. The first MHT CET 2027 session is expected from 15 December 2026 to 15 January 2027, with a second in April 2027. Confirm the dates and check the Class 11 unit list against the 2027 notice on the CET Cell website.
Which textbook are MHT CET chemistry questions set from?
The Maharashtra state board textbooks. The CET Cell says the questions are based on the syllabus of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Maharashtra (CET Cell, 2026 syllabus, page 1). The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) textbooks follow that syllabus. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is not named.
Our advice is to read each chapter in the state board book first. Use NCERT only when the state book explains a concept too thinly for you to follow, and stop once you have the idea. Giving one chapter two books' worth of time costs you practice hours.
The textbook alone is not enough. Facts, reactions and definitions come from the book, but "application based" means you must also practise questions in the exam's style. Read a chapter, then drill MCQs on it straight away, not at the end of the year.

Can you trust MHT CET chemistry weightage tables?
No. No chapter-wise weightage is official, and the public tables contradict each other. Use them to decide which chapter gets more hours, never to drop one. The CET Cell's syllabus gives the 10 + 40 split and the Class 11 unit list, not chapter-wise question counts.
We compared three public weightage tables on 4 October 2026. Two of them give figures for the same chapters:
| Chapter | Table A | Table B |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical Thermodynamics | 11% | 15% |
| p-block elements | 10% | 9% |
| d and f block elements | 9.5% | 8% |
On 50 questions, the Thermodynamics gap of 4 percentage points is 2 questions (4% × 50). The p-block gap is half a question and the d and f gap is three-quarters of one. Table A has no Coordination Compounds row at all, while Table B gives it 9%, which is 4.5 questions.
Two further checks show why a table cannot be your plan:
- Completeness. Table A's 15 chapters add up to 99.84%, yet it has no rows for Solid State, Polymers or Chemistry in Everyday Life. Its Class 11 chapters (Chemical Bonding 6.5%, Structure of Atom 3%, General Organic Chemistry 4%, which we have matched to the Class 11 unit Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry) total 13.5%, about 7 questions of 50. The CET Cell sets 10.
- Syllabus match. Table C lists Hydrogen at 7%, but Hydrogen is not one of the ten Class 11 units in the 2026 syllabus. Its nine rows add up to 67%, and it calls them tentative.
Our recommendation: treat every chapter in the syllabus as examinable, give extra hours to chapters with many reactions or many calculation questions, and let your own test results decide where to go deeper.
How should you split the 90 minutes between chemistry and physics?
Aim to finish chemistry in 35 to 40 minutes, which is 42 to 48 seconds per question. The 90 minutes cover 100 questions, an average of 54 seconds each (90 × 60 ÷ 100). Our model, built from the CET Cell's 90-minute figure:

| Minutes on chemistry | Seconds per chemistry question | Minutes left for physics | Seconds per physics question |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35 | 42 | 55 | 66 |
| 40 | 48 | 50 | 60 |
| 45 | 54 | 45 | 54 (no time gained over the average) |
Each minute you save in chemistry gives physics 60 ÷ 50 = 1.2 seconds more per question. Physics calculation questions usually take longer than a chemistry fact, so 35 to 40 minutes is the target once you recall reactions quickly.
Chemistry rewards recall: if you cannot recall a fact within about 30 seconds, extra seconds rarely help. Mark an option and move on.
How do you prepare MHT CET chemistry chapter by chapter?
Run the same five tests on every chapter, and call the chapter done only when it passes all five. The pass marks are our benchmarks, not official figures.
How do you run the book test on an MHT CET chemistry chapter?
You pass the book test when you miss no more than 2 in every 10 points. Read the chapter in the state board textbook, close it, and in 10 minutes write the headings, definitions, reactions or formulas you remember. Check against the book. If you miss more than 2 in 10, reread only the parts you missed. How do you run the sheet test for organic and inorganic chapters?
You pass the sheet test when you rewrite your one-page sheet next day with no more than 2 errors. For organic chapters, the sheet holds reactions with reagents and conditions. For inorganic chapters, it holds properties, colours, oxidation states and exceptions. How do you run the MCQ test on a chapter?
You pass the MCQ test with 24 or more correct out of 30 (80%). Solve 30 chapter MCQs in 21 minutes (30 × 42 seconds). For physical chemistry chapters, also redo every solved example in the textbook without looking at the answer; every final answer must match. How do you keep an error log for chemistry?
You pass the error log when you retry the wrong answers after three days and get all of them right. Tag each wrong answer as concept, forgot fact, calculation, misread or time, and write a one-line fix. Our page on analysing an MHT CET mock test shows a full error-log method.
How do you run the mixed set after three chapters?
You pass the mixed set with 40 or more correct out of 50 (80%) in 40 minutes. After every three finished chapters, solve 50 mixed questions from those chapters. The 40-minute limit matches the time budget above.
For Class 12, take the chapter list from the contents page of your textbook. For Class 11, use the official unit list. Our grouping of those ten units is below.
| Class 11 unit (CET Cell 2026 list) | Group (our grouping) |
|---|---|
| Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry | Physical |
| Structure of Atom | Physical |
| Chemical Bonding | Physical |
| Redox Reactions | Physical |
| Elements of Group 1 and 2 | Inorganic |
| States of Matter (Gaseous and Liquids) | Physical |
| Adsorption and Colloids (Surface Chemistry) | Physical |
| Hydrocarbons | Organic |
| Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry | Organic |
| Chemistry in Everyday Life | Organic (applied) |
In our grouping, six of the ten units are physical chemistry, which rewards calculation practice. These ten units carry about a fifth of the paper, so cover them after Class 12 rather than dropping them.
If the first session starts in mid-December, you have about ten weeks from 4 October (72 days). Our pacing model: days per chapter = (days left − 7 days of full mocks) ÷ (Class 12 chapters + 10 Class 11 units). For example, with 26 chapters and units in total, (72 − 7) ÷ 26 = 2.5 days per chapter. Run a mixed set every week.
