12th HSC Physics: Study Every Chapter for Boards and CET

TL;DR

Study all 16 12th HSC Physics chapters in one loop: learn the concept, read the official textbook, write derivations, solve board numericals, practise a written answer, then do timed MHT-CET MCQs. Track each task separately, because Board marks reward clear written method while MHT-CET rewards application under time.

Use the same six-task loop for all 16 chapters in the official Balbharati Physics textbook: learn, read, derive, solve, write, and test. For MHT-CET, add timed MCQs after the Board work, because the current syllabus assigns 40 Physics questions to Std. XII and 10 to Std. XI.

Do not treat a watched lecture or highlighted page as a finished chapter. A chapter is finished when you can explain its idea, write its derivation, solve a numerical with units, answer a Board-style question, and repair your CET mistakes.

Use This Six-Task Loop for Every Chapter

Start with one chapter and complete the same six tasks before moving on.

  1. Learn the idea for 25 minutes. Use one lesson, teacher, or set of notes. Write three questions the chapter must answer.

  2. Read the official textbook for 20 minutes. Mark definitions, diagrams, formula conditions, solved examples, and exercise questions. Use the official PDF, not a random download.

  3. Write two derivations or diagrams from memory. Read the method once, close the book, and write it. Compare your version with the textbook. Circle each missing step.

  4. Solve three Board numericals. Write given values, formula, substitution, calculation, unit, and final sentence. Redo any numerical with a wrong unit or skipped step.

  5. Write one Board answer. Choose a definition, explanation, derivation, or numerical from an official sample paper. Write it as if an examiner will see only your answer sheet.

  6. Attempt 10 CET-style MCQs. Mark every wrong answer as one of five errors: concept, formula, method, calculation, or misread question. Retry the wrong questions two days later without seeing solutions.

Keep Board writing and CET practice separate. Board work proves that you can show method. CET work proves that you can choose and apply a method quickly.

The two tables give you evidence for every chapter. A blank cell tells you what to do next, so you do not waste an evening rereading a chapter you already understand. For a fuller revision-status system, use our HSC Physics revision tracker.

Read the Textbook for Answers, Not Highlights

The textbook tells you the exact language, diagrams, examples, and chapter order you need for HSC. Read with a pen, but make the pen produce an answer.

For each subtopic, write these four lines in your chapter sheet:

  • Idea: What does this law, device, or effect explain?
  • Formula: What does every symbol mean, and when does the formula apply?
  • Diagram: Can you draw and label it without the book?
  • Question: What would a Board examiner ask about this idea?

For example, after reading Current Electricity, do not write “Ohm’s law done.” Write its statement, formula, graph, unit of resistance, and one condition where the simple relation may not hold. Then solve a textbook question without reopening the example.

Use one main source for explanation. Switching between five teachers can give you five shortcuts but no reliable method.

Write Derivations and Numericals Differently

A derivation is a memory-and-logic task. A numerical is a selection-and-calculation task. Give both their own practice block.

For a derivation, use this order:

  1. Draw the labelled setup.
  2. State the principle or starting relation.
  3. Show each algebraic step on a new line.
  4. Box the final result.
  5. Write the physical meaning if the question asks for it.

For a numerical, use this order:

  1. List the given values with units.
  2. Write the formula before inserting numbers.
  3. Convert units before calculating.
  4. Show the substitution.
  5. State the final answer with the correct unit.

A numerical with the right final number but no visible method is poor Board practice. A long derivation copied from notes is poor CET practice. Train the two skills separately, then connect them through the same chapter concept.

Write HSC Physics Answers for Marks

A good HSC Physics answer makes your reasoning easy to follow. Use this answer frame for theory, derivation, and numerical questions:

Principle or definition: __
**Diagram or known values: _
_
**Equation or explanation: __
**Working: _
_
**Final result with unit or conclusion: ______

Use the Board’s Physics sample papers to find written questions. Write one answer by hand each time you complete a chapter. Check whether your answer has the requested definition, diagram, equation, workings, unit, and conclusion.

If you keep missing the same item, add it to the chapter’s doubt field. “Weak in Electrostatics” is too broad. “Forget the dielectric step in capacitor derivations” gives you a repair job.

Add MHT-CET Practice After Board Work

As per the official exam pattern, MHT-CET Physics uses four-option MCQs. Physics and Chemistry appear in the first 90-minute block, and the current exam has no negative marking. After you finish the Board tasks for a chapter, do this:

  1. Attempt 10 MCQs from that chapter without notes.
  2. Mark each answer correct, wrong, unattempted, or guessed-correct.
  3. Add one error label beside every wrong and guessed-correct answer.
  4. Relearn only the error label that repeats.
  5. Retry the missed questions after two days.

Class XII should get most of your CET time, but CET also includes Std. XI Physics. The official Std. XI list includes Vectors, Error Analysis, Motion in a Plane, Laws of Motion, Gravitation, Thermal Properties of Matter, Sound, Optics, Electrostatics, and Semiconductors. Use our CET Physics syllabus checklist to schedule that catch-up work.

Student reviewing physics error log

Use a Weekly Study Plan That Keeps Chapters Alive

Use six study days each week.

  • Day 1: Complete the highest-priority unfinished chapter task.
  • Day 2: Write two derivations from the previous chapter.
  • Day 3: Solve Board numericals and one written answer.
  • Day 4: Do 10 CET MCQs and update the error log.
  • Day 5: Repair your oldest red or yellow chapter.
  • Day 6: Mix questions from two older chapters.
  • Day 7: Rest, or spend 20 minutes recalling formulas and diagrams.

Use three revision labels:

  • Red: You cannot explain or solve the task without notes.
  • Yellow: You can follow the method but still miss steps.
  • Green: You can solve or write the task independently.

A green chapter still needs retrieval. Revisit it with one mixed question, not a full reread. When you begin chapter-level CET practice, use a Physics PYQ plan and take a free chapter-level mock once you have several green chapters.

FAQs

What Is the HSC Physics Subject Code?

Physics is HSC subject code 54 on the Maharashtra Board’s sample-question-paper portal. Use that code when you look for official Physics practice material.

Can I Choose Marathi for MHT-CET Physics?

Yes. The current MHT-CET brochure lists English, Marathi, and Urdu for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Choose your language carefully during application because the selected option cannot be changed later.

Can I Use a Calculator in MHT-CET?

No. The current MHT-CET instructions prohibit calculators and calculator watches in the examination hall. Practise calculations by hand during your MCQ sessions.

Is MHT-CET Physics Application-based?

Yes. The current official syllabus says Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics questions are mainly application-based and set at JEE Main level. Learn the Board method first, then practise selecting that method in MCQs.

Can I Use Old HSC Physics Papers?

Yes. The Board’s download area includes HSC February and July question-paper collections for recent years. Use older papers to practise writing and error review, then use the current sample-paper portal for format familiarity.
