Introduction

A 12-week IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) course and a 30-hour university paper can look the same size and still teach different things. The NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) Engineering Mechanics course by Prof. K. Ramesh of IIT Madras runs for 12 weeks. The first-year paper at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) carries the code ESC-104-CVL, the Engineering Science Course code for Engineering Mechanics, and has five units of six hours each.

SPPU spends those hours evenly. Unit I covers force systems, resultants, centroid and moment of inertia; Unit II equilibrium; Unit III friction and trusses; Units IV and V the kinematics and kinetics of a particle. Centroid and moment of inertia are in Unit I, yet none of the 12 week titles in Prof. K. Ramesh's course names them. A week spent on virtual work is a week not spent on friction or trusses.

Key takeaways

  • For an SPPU first-year student, our Engineering Mechanics course for Pune University is the better main course, because it is built for ESC-104-CVL and taught in Hindi.
  • In Prof. K. Ramesh's NPTEL course, 6 of 12 weeks (5 and 8 to 12) cover topics outside SPPU Units I to V. In the 44-lecture IIT Guwahati course, 24 lectures, counted by module, do.
  • Centroid and moment of inertia sit in SPPU Unit I, but none of the 12 week titles in Prof. K. Ramesh's course names them.
  • Our course is recorded, self-paced and in Hindi, starts from the basics, and is a one-time purchase.

Why is our Pune University course the better fit for SPPU Engineering Mechanics?

Choose our course because it is built for ESC-104-CVL, is taught in Hindi from the basics, and is a self-paced, one-time purchase. Four facts back this up.

  1. It is built for your paper. Our Pune University course is designed for first-year students assigned ESC-104-CVL. Prof. K. Ramesh's NPTEL course is written for any interested learner, so it does not follow your syllabus.
  2. SPPU gives particle dynamics a large share of its hours. SPPU allots 12 of the 30 theory hours (40%) to Units IV and V, the kinematics and kinetics of a particle. Prof. K. Ramesh's course has one week on particle dynamics, shared with belt friction.
  3. It is in Hindi and starts from the basics. Our lectures are in Hindi and start from the basics, which suits students whose Class 11 and 12 mechanics is shaky.
  4. It is self-paced and a one-time purchase. You pay once and can rewatch any lecture until the access date.

NPTEL lectures are free to watch; our course adds Hindi teaching built around ESC-104-CVL. See our Engineering Mechanics SPPU online course guide for the course.

How much of NPTEL Engineering Mechanics is on the SPPU syllabus?

Less than it looks: 6 of the 12 weeks in Prof. K. Ramesh's course, and 24 of the 44 lectures in the IIT Guwahati course, cover topics outside SPPU Units I to V. The table shows where each SPPU unit falls in the three NPTEL courses that cover them.

The SPPU 2024-pattern syllabus puts centroid of basic and composite figures, moment of inertia, and the parallel and perpendicular axis theorems in Unit I.

  • IIT Madras: the weeks outside SPPU are virtual work (5), plane rigid-body kinematics (8), instantaneous centre and rotating frames (9 and 10), plane kinetics (11) and 3D kinematics (12).
  • IIT Guwahati, counted by module: modules 1 to 6 and 10 hold 20 lectures (2+3+3+3+2+3+4). Modules 7 to 9 and 11 to 15, covering mass moment of inertia, virtual work, rigid-body kinematics and kinetics, and vibrations, hold the other 24 (2+2+3+3+2+4+3+5). 20 + 24 = 44. A few lectures inside the first group, such as cables and Mohr's circle, go beyond SPPU but are counted as on-topic.
  • IIT Kanpur: weeks 1 to 5 and 7 to 9 match SPPU topics (8 weeks), and weeks 6 and 10 to 12 do not (4 weeks).

How do the NPTEL Engineering Mechanics courses differ?

The IIT Kanpur course, taught in the Department of Physics, fits best if you go with NPTEL alone, because 8 of its 12 weeks match Units I to V. The IIT Madras course by Prof. K. Ramesh has 12 weeks, and the IIT Guwahati course has 44 lectures.

Take our Pune University course, which is built for ESC-104-CVL, and use our pages on centroid, moment of inertia and the free body diagram for revision. For a study order, read our unit-by-unit plan for engineering mechanics.

What does the NPTEL certificate involve?

The NPTEL certificate involves a separate paid exam taken in person at a proctored (supervised in person) centre. The NPTEL FAQ sets two thresholds: an assignment average of at least 40 out of 100 and an exam score of at least 40 out of 100. In practice that means at least 10 out of 25 on assignments and at least 30 out of 75 in the exam, because assignments carry 25% and the final proctored exam 75% of the weighting. Missing either one means no certificate. Pass criteria can vary by course, so check the announcement for the course you join.

Preparing for that exam means studying the whole course, including the weeks outside Units I to V. If your only target is the SPPU paper, those weeks are extra time.

Our verdict

For an SPPU first-year student, our Engineering Mechanics course for Pune University is the better main course, because it is built for ESC-104-CVL and taught in Hindi.

How we compared

We compared the week and module titles of three NPTEL Engineering Mechanics courses (IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati) against the ESC-104-CVL topic list in the SPPU 2024-pattern syllabus, and checked the NPTEL FAQ and our own course page, as of October 2026. We did not compare teaching quality or lecture content beyond those titles.

Frequently asked

Yes, the lectures are free to watch, and the certificate is the paid part. NPTEL's FAQ says learners register and pay for exams, which are held in person under supervision (proctored). You do not need the exam to learn the subject.
By their syllabus titles, the IIT Kanpur and IIT Guwahati courses cover the topics of all five units. The IIT Madras course alone leaves centroid and moment of inertia out of its week titles. Our course for Pune University is built around the paper itself.
SPPU lists basic calculus, trigonometry, geometrical expressions, laws of motion and the concept of mass, with basic engineering mathematics and physics, as the prerequisites for ESC-104-CVL, according to its syllabus. Our Hindi course for Pune University starts from the basics and is built for first-year students assigned that paper, so a shaky start in mechanics is not a barrier to beginning.
The IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur courses are planned over 12 weeks, and the IIT Guwahati course has 44 lectures. If you pull out only the SPPU-matching parts, the IIT Kanpur course drops to 8 of 12 weeks. Pick the course by the weeks you will actually watch.
Take Engineering Mechanics (All Universities). It is built for Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Amravati and DBATU (Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University) syllabi, and its lectures are in Hindi. In Pune, the Pune University course is the closer match.
